Job Description

Role Overview

Britam, one of East Africa's leading diversified financial services groups, is seeking a detail-oriented and analytically driven Internal Auditor to join its Group Assurance team. Reporting directly to the Holdings Assurance Manager, the successful candidate will play a pivotal role in safeguarding the integrity, efficiency, and regulatory compliance of the Group's operations across its insurance, asset management, and banking business units.

This is a high-impact role that goes beyond traditional audit functions. The Internal Auditor will be expected to integrate data analytics, evaluate cybersecurity posture, and lead themed audits on emerging risk areas including digital transformation, ESG data integrity, and operational resilience — making it an ideal opportunity for a forward-thinking audit professional ready to shape the future of assurance at a regional financial powerhouse.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct end-to-end internal audits in line with the approved Annual Internal Audit Plan and international standards for the professional practice of internal auditing (IIA Standards).
  • Identify, critically evaluate, and document elements of governance and risk management across Group operations, and design appropriate risk mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate with the Holdings Assurance Manager to develop detailed, risk-based audit programmes grounded in documented procedures and industry best practice.
  • Perform comprehensive audit tests covering operational effectiveness, financial reliability, and compliance with applicable legislation and regulatory requirements.
  • Independently determine audit scope for individual assignments and adapt scope dynamically when field conditions require it.
  • Gather sufficient, relevant audit evidence to substantiate findings and develop actionable recommendations for management.
  • Maintain open, continuous communication with management and key stakeholders throughout the audit cycle to resolve issues before final reporting.
  • Review and document existing accounting, administrative, and internal control systems, recommending improvements for adequacy and effectiveness.
  • Integrate data analytics tools into audit planning, fieldwork, and reporting to enhance the quality and depth of assurance coverage.
  • Evaluate IT general controls, cybersecurity posture, and IT governance frameworks across all business units.
  • Lead and contribute to themed audits in areas such as cloud security, digital transformation risk, ESG data integrity, and operational resilience.
  • Apply automated testing techniques and continuous monitoring methodologies to strengthen proactive risk identification.
  • Deliver on individual performance targets aligned to the department's balanced scorecard and strategic objectives.
Required Skills & Experience
  • Must hold a Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field from a recognized institution.
  • Must be a CPA (K) certified professional in good standing with ICPAK.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to plan and execute risk-based audits independently with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to interpret complex financial data, identify control weaknesses, and translate findings into clear, actionable audit reports.
  • Must show proven competency in applying data analytics tools (e.g., ACL, IDEA, Power BI, or equivalent) within an audit context.
  • Must be capable of evaluating IT controls and cybersecurity risks within a financial services environment.
  • Must exhibit strong stakeholder engagement skills — able to communicate audit findings diplomatically yet assertively to senior management.
  • Must demonstrate working knowledge of relevant Kenyan regulatory frameworks including IRA, CMA, and CBK requirements as applicable to a diversified financial group.
  • Prior experience in internal audit within a financial services, insurance, or large corporate group environment is strongly preferred.
  • Membership in the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) or Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) designation is an added advantage.

Based on current Kenyan market benchmarks for mid-level audit professionals within the financial services sector, the estimated monthly gross salary ranges between KES 120,000 and KES 200,000. The package is complemented by a comprehensive benefits offering reflective of Britam's position as a top-tier employer in Kenya.
