Job Description

Role Overview

SunCulture is on a mission to transform smallholder farming across Africa through solar-powered irrigation and fintech solutions. As a Finance Strategy Associate, you will sit at the intersection of financial analysis, capital raising, and strategic decision-making during one of the most exciting growth phases in the company's history. This is a rare opportunity to gain hands-on exposure to the full lifecycle of emerging-market finance — from building investor-grade financial models to coordinating multi-million-dollar debt and equity raises.

Reporting closely to the CFO, you will work across internal teams including FP&A and Business Intelligence, as well as external stakeholders such as investors, lenders, and grant providers. If you are a rigorous analyst who thrives in ambiguity and wants to see your work directly shape a company scaling across multiple African markets, this role is built for you.

Key Responsibilities
  • Build, maintain, and deploy group-level and entity-level financial models for budgeting, business planning, and capital raising purposes.
  • Develop and maintain short-term cash flow forecasts, unit economics frameworks, pricing analyses, and elasticity-of-demand studies.
  • Conduct deep-dive analysis into credit loss, after-sales performance, and other key unit economics drivers in collaboration with the FP&A team.
  • Partner with FP&A and Business Intelligence teams to shape data, develop forecasting models, and leverage IoT and payment data to support strategic decisions.
  • Coordinate and track all capital raising workstreams — equity, debt, grants, and technical assistance — ensuring timely and accurate execution.
  • Lead the development of capital raise materials including investment memoranda, data rooms, financial models, and market studies, as well as manage due diligence processes.
  • Manage FX risk and other financing-related workstreams in coordination with the CFO.
  • Provide financial modelling and business case support for new product offerings (carbon revenues, insurance, warranty extensions, refurbished product sales, marketplace platforms) and new market entries.
  • Prepare stakeholder reports covering financial, operational, and impact performance for the Board, shareholders, lenders, grant providers, and partners.
  • Support the CFO on corporate governance activities including board management and enterprise risk management.
Required Skills & Experience
  • Demonstrate at least four years of hands-on experience in financial modelling, financial analysis, or capital raising within corporate finance, private equity, venture capital, or an in-house corporate finance function.
  • Build complex, investor-ready financial models from scratch with minimal supervision — including three-statement models, DCF analyses, and scenario/sensitivity frameworks.
  • Communicate financial insights clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences, including C-suite executives and external investors.
  • Manage multiple concurrent workstreams under tight deadlines while maintaining a high standard of accuracy and output quality.
  • Navigate ambiguity and operate autonomously in a fast-paced, resource-constrained emerging-market environment.
  • Hold or be actively pursuing a CFA designation, a professional accountancy qualification (CPA, ACCA, or equivalent), or an MBA — preferred but not strictly required.
  • Demonstrate strong organisational skills and creative problem-solving capability, particularly when data is incomplete or imperfect.
  • Experience with FP&A software tools, BI platforms, or data analytics (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, SQL) is a strong advantage.
Salary & Benefits

SunCulture offers a competitive, market-aligned compensation package commensurate with experience in the fintech and agri-finance space. The estimated monthly gross salary for this role ranges from KES 200,000 to KES 350,000 depending on qualifications and demonstrated experience. Additional benefits typical of the role and company stage include performance-linked bonuses, professional development support, and the opportunity to hold equity or phantom equity in a high-growth impact company. Specific package details will be confirmed during the recruitment process.

Who Should Apply

Ideal candidates are finance professionals with a genuine passion for impact investing, emerging-market growth companies, or agricultural development finance. You are equally comfortable in a spreadsheet and a boardroom, you take pride in the quality of every output you produce, and you are energised — not frustrated — by the complexity of scaling a business across multiple African markets. You may come from investment banking, a DFI, a PE/VC fund, or a fast-growing startup's internal finance team.

Do not apply if you are looking for a purely routine, process-driven accounting role, if you require highly structured environments with well-defined playbooks, or if you have fewer than three years of direct financial modelling and analysis experience. This role demands both technical depth and strategic agility.

How to Apply
  • Prepare an updated CV highlighting relevant financial modelling, capital raising, or strategic finance experience.
  • Write a concise cover letter (no more than one page) explaining why you are drawn to SunCulture's mission and how your background maps to the key responsibilities above.
  • Submit your application through SunCulture's official careers portal or the job board where you discovered this listing.
  • Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an initial screening call followed by a technical assessment and panel interviews with senior leadership.
  • Only shortlisted applicants will be contacted. SunCulture is an equal-opportunity employer and actively encourages applications from candidates of all backgrounds.

Honest Assessment

Green Flags

  • Direct reporting to CFO and involvement in board-level work signals real strategic influence, not junior busywork.
  • Explicit mention of multiple revenue streams (carbon, insurance, warranty, refurbished products, marketplace) and multi-market expansion shows genuine complexity and learning opportunity.
  • Capital raising coordination across equity, debt, grants, and TA demonstrates exposure to the full emerging-market finance toolkit.
  • Company is mission-driven (smallholder farming, solar, Africa) and in a high-growth phase — strong signal of impact and career acceleration.

Watch Out

  • Job description cuts off mid-sentence ('Manage multiple concurrent work') — suggests the posting may be incomplete or hastily uploaded; clarify full scope with recruiter.
  • Salary range is wide (KES 200k–350k, a 75% spread) with no clarity on what drives placement within it — ask about compensation philosophy relative to experience and deal exposure.

A Day in the Life

☀️

Your week oscillates between deep analytical work and stakeholder management: Monday morning, you refine cash flow forecasts using latest payment data with the BI team, then prepare a Board-ready summary of unit economics by unit type for the CFO. Tuesday–Wednesday, you're knee-deep in a debt raise — updating the investment memorandum, stress-testing debt capacity models, and fielding lender questions on market assumptions. Thursday, you partner with product to model the financial impact of a new insurance offering, sense-checking pricing elasticity and margin contribution. Friday, you're back with FP&A scoping next quarter's budget and reflecting on what the month's capital market developments (interest rate, FX shifts) mean for refinancing strategy. Throughout, you're juggling Slack with investors, grant providers, and your CFO, always translating numbers into strategy.
