Job Description

Role Overview

Connect Coffee Roasters is a dynamic and growing coffee roasting company based in Nairobi, Kenya, passionate about delivering exceptional coffee experiences. As the business scales, we are looking for a dedicated and people-focused Human Resources Officer to join our team and help build a thriving workplace culture rooted in fairness, growth, and performance.

In this role, you will be the backbone of our people operations — managing everything from hiring and onboarding to employee relations, compliance, and staff development. If you are an HR professional who thrives in a fast-paced, hands-on environment and genuinely cares about the people you support, this is your opportunity to make a meaningful impact.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead end-to-end recruitment processes including job posting, shortlisting, interviewing, and onboarding new employees seamlessly into the organisation.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date employee records and ensure all HR documentation — contracts, personal files, policy acknowledgements — is properly managed and stored.
  • Administer employee benefits programs including health cover, leave entitlements, and ensuring timely and accurate processing of all related requests.
  • Oversee and coordinate performance management cycles, including appraisals, goal-setting, and feedback sessions, to drive a high-performance culture.
  • Ensure full compliance with Kenyan labour laws, Employment Act requirements, company policies, and applicable HR regulations.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for employee concerns, grievances, and conflict resolution, promoting a respectful and productive work environment.
  • Plan and coordinate staff training programs, capacity-building workshops, and professional development initiatives aligned with business goals.
  • Support management in HR reporting, workforce planning, and the continuous improvement of HR processes and policies.
Required Skills & Experience
  • Demonstrate hands-on experience managing full-cycle recruitment independently, from sourcing candidates to facilitating structured onboarding.
  • Apply working knowledge of the Kenya Employment Act, Labour Relations Act, and related regulations to ensure organisational compliance at all times.
  • Manage and resolve employee relations issues professionally, maintaining confidentiality and neutrality throughout conflict resolution processes.
  • Design and administer performance appraisal frameworks that align individual goals with organisational objectives.
  • Maintain meticulous HR records using HRIS tools or structured manual systems, ensuring data accuracy and accessibility.
  • Communicate effectively — both verbally and in writing — with staff at all levels, from production floor employees to senior management.
  • Coordinate multiple HR functions simultaneously with strong organisational and time-management skills in a fast-moving environment.
  • Hold a Bachelor's degree in Human Resource Management, Business Administration, or a related field; CHRP-K certification or membership with IHRM Kenya is an added advantage.
  • Bring at least 2–4 years of proven HR experience, preferably in a manufacturing, FMCG, or food and beverage setting.
Salary & Benefits

The salary for this position is open and competitive, commensurate with your experience and qualifications. Based on current Kenyan market rates for a mid-level HR Officer role in Nairobi, candidates can expect a monthly gross salary in the range of KES 55,000 – KES 100,000. Connect Coffee Roasters is committed to recognising and rewarding talent fairly.

  • Competitive salary benchmarked to market rates
  • Opportunity to grow within a scaling Kenyan brand
  • Collaborative and values-driven work environment
Who Should Apply

You thrive without heavy supervision and take ownership of your portfolio.

Please do NOT apply if you have no hands-on HR experience beyond academic study, if you are looking for a purely administrative role with no people-engagement component, or if you are not based in Nairobi or able to work full-time on-site.

Honest Assessment

Green Flags

  • Clear, detailed responsibility list shows this is a genuine, well-thought-out role rather than a vague 'wear many hats' posting.
  • Company explicitly values fair workplace culture and growth—this indicates a values-driven employer likely to invest in HR function and employee experience.
  • Salary range is transparent and competitive, suggesting a professional approach to hiring.
  • Full-cycle recruitment ownership and strategic HR functions (training, compliance, performance management) indicate this role has real influence and career development potential.

Watch Out

  • The job description cuts off mid-sentence at 'CHRP-K certifi'—unclear if certification is mandatory or nice-to-have. Clarify this in your application or first interview question.
  • No mention of team size, budget, or HR technology stack beyond 'HRIS tools or manual systems'—this suggests the role may be largely solo HR work with limited resources or tech infrastructure.
  • No explicit mention of remote work eligibility or flexible arrangements, despite common expectations for HR roles in Nairobi in 2024.

A Day in the Life

☀️

Your week at Connect Coffee Roasters typically spans three parallel tracks: recruitment (screening CVs, scheduling interviews with shortlisted candidates, coordinating new starter onboarding paperwork), compliance and administration (updating employee records, processing leave requests, preparing payroll inputs, reviewing policies against Kenya Employment Act updates), and people management (facilitating a performance feedback session with a department head, mediating an employee concern, planning a training workshop on safety or customer service). You're constantly context-switching between the production floor, the office team, and senior management—using HR tools to stay organised, legal documents and templates to ensure compliance, and genuine people skills to resolve conflicts and build trust. By Friday, you're likely reviewing the week's hiring pipeline, summarising HR metrics for the leadership team, and designing next month's development initiative.
