Laboratory Technician – Pharmacy

Kenya Methodist University (KeMU) — a Chartered Private Christian Institution of higher learning based in Nairobi — is seeking a skilled and dedicated Laboratory Technician to support its Pharmacy department. This is a full-time, on-site role designed for a hands-on professional who thrives in an academic laboratory environment and is passionate about supporting quality science education.

The successful candidate will play a central role in ensuring pharmacy and science laboratories are safe, well-equipped, and efficiently run for both teaching and research activities. You will work closely with academic staff and students, providing critical technical support that enhances the overall learning experience at the university.

• Catalogue laboratory recordings, materials, and resources, and make them readily available upon request by staff or students.
• Coordinate day-to-day laboratory operations to ensure efficient and safe use of all equipment and resources.
• Enforce health and safety procedures across the laboratory, ensuring all users understand and comply with protocols at all times.
• Ensure all equipment is properly cleaned after use and that chemicals, drugs, and other materials are stored appropriately and securely.
• Carry out routine maintenance and minor repairs on laboratory equipment and apparatus to minimise downtime.
• Prepare equipment, reagents, and chemicals ahead of practical lessons and demonstrations.
• Maintain accurate records for student practical sessions, tracking methods, outcomes, and laboratory usage.
• Run trial experiments before scheduled classes and demonstrate correct techniques and procedures to students.
• Support academic staff during classes, laboratory sessions, and practicals by providing timely technical assistance and guidance.
• Liaise with academic staff to coordinate timetables, equipment requirements, and work plans for upcoming practical sessions.
• Provide one-on-one technical support to students undertaking independent or group research projects.

• Able to prepare, set up, and safely operate pharmacy and science laboratory equipment for both teaching and research purposes.
• Able to handle, store, and dispose of chemicals, pharmaceutical compounds, and laboratory materials in compliance with safety regulations.
• Able to maintain organised and accurate records of equipment use, student practicals, and inventory stock levels.
• Able to troubleshoot and perform basic maintenance on laboratory instruments and apparatus without external assistance.
• Able to communicate clearly with both academic staff and students to ensure smooth coordination of laboratory activities.
• Able to manage multiple concurrent tasks and prioritise workload effectively in a busy academic setting.
• Prior hands-on experience working in a university, pharmaceutical, or scientific laboratory is required.
• Practical knowledge in pharmacognosy, pharmaceutical chemistry, or pharmaceutics is a distinct advantage.

KeMU offers a competitive compensation package in line with university staff salary scales. Based on the role level and Kenyan market benchmarks, the estimated monthly gross salary for this position falls in the range of KES 35,000 – 60,000. Specific remuneration will be disclosed to shortlisted candidates during the selection process.

Ideal candidate: You hold a Diploma in Pharmacy or Laboratory Sciences from a recognised institution, have at least one year of hands-on laboratory experience (preferably in an academic or research setting), and are committed to maintaining high standards of safety and accuracy.
