Medical Officer Intern

Aga Khan Hospital Kisumu, a 61-bed acute care facility established in 1952 and part of the Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS) network, is seeking four (4) motivated Medical Officer Interns to join its clinical team. This is a structured internship opportunity designed to help newly graduated medical doctors fulfill their Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) registration requirements in a high-quality, professionally managed environment.

Working under the close supervision of experienced consultants and senior clinicians, successful candidates will rotate across various departments, consolidating their clinical knowledge, technical skills, and professional attitudes. This role is ideal for MBChB graduates who are eager to develop into competent, ethical, and evidence-based medical practitioners within one of Western Kenya's leading healthcare institutions.

• Conduct timely, legible, and accurate clinical history-taking and physical examinations for patients assigned to your unit.
• Document all clinical findings, management plans, and recommendations accurately in patient records, ensuring records are kept up to date at all times.
• Carry out regular and continuous follow-up of patients in assigned departments, escalating concerns to supervising clinicians promptly.
• Request and perform relevant diagnostic investigations as directed by supervisors, interpreting results within your scope of practice.
• Participate in surgical procedures under the direct supervision of senior colleagues in the department.
• Communicate effectively with patients and their relatives regarding diagnosis, treatment plans, expected outcomes, and follow-up care.
• Write accurate and comprehensive case summaries, referral letters, and discharge summaries in a timely manner.
• Present cases concisely and competently during ward rounds, grand rounds, and morbidity and mortality audit meetings.
• Participate in clinical audits and document findings using the facility's approved audit tools.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary health professionals to ensure seamless continuity of patient care.
• Uphold the dignity, ethics, and professional standards of the medical profession at all times.
• Participate in the hospital's Continuous Medical Education (CME) activities, research initiatives, and innovation programs.
• Provide regular feedback to the Internship Coordinator, Internship Supervisors, and the KMPDC on the progress of your internship training.
• Promote knowledge-based and evidence-based healthcare practices in all clinical interactions.

• Must hold an MBChB degree from a medical school recognized by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).
• Must possess a valid Internship License issued by the KMPDC.
• Must hold a current, valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate.
• Must hold or be willing to obtain a PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification.
• Ability to perform accurate clinical assessments and document findings with clarity and precision.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams.
• Capacity to work under supervision while showing initiative, sound clinical reasoning, and professional judgment.
• Ability to manage time effectively, prioritize tasks, and work in a fast-paced acute care environment.
• Commitment to ethical medical practice, patient confidentiality, and continuous professional development.

Remuneration for this internship position is in line with KMPDC internship stipend guidelines and Aga Khan Health Services standards. The estimated monthly stipend ranges from KES 70,000 to KES 100,000. Interns at Aga Khan Hospital Kisumu benefit from supervised exposure to a broad range of clinical disciplines in a well-equipped, accredited training environment.
