Feminist Knowledge Leadership Assistant
Urgent Action Fund-Africa
Job Description
Urgent Action Fund-Africa (UAF-Africa) is seeking a driven and committed Feminist Knowledge Leadership (FKL) Assistant to join its dynamic team. This role sits at the heart of the organisation's efforts to document, amplify, and advance feminist knowledge production across Africa. The FKL Assistant will contribute meaningfully to research, learning, documentation, and monitoring activities that underpin UAF-Africa's Knowledge Leadership Strategy.
Working under the guidance of the FKL Coordinator, the successful candidate will take ownership of defined workstreams spanning research coordination, Registry partnership management, learning documentation for the Feminist Republik platform and Festival, and substantive support to the Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) function. This is an excellent opportunity for a feminist practitioner who is passionate about movement building, knowledge justice, and rigorous documentation.
- Coordinate feminist research, learning, and knowledge production processes from planning to completion, tracking progress and flagging risks against agreed workplans.
- Assist in developing research methodologies, Terms of Reference (ToRs), ethical documentation frameworks, and thematic knowledge products, including review and quality assurance.
- Provide editorial and substantive support in drafting research reports, learning briefs, publications, and trend analyses.
- Conduct desk research, literature reviews, stakeholder mapping, and documentation of feminist organising practices, synthesising findings into accessible learning outputs.
- Coordinate learning and documentation processes for the Feminist Republik Festival and related convenings, ensuring timely delivery of outputs.
- Facilitate or co-facilitate interviews, focus group discussions, reflective dialogues, and learning convenings grounded in feminist methodologies.
- Lead preparation of synthesis notes, impact stories, reflection pieces, and narrative reports under the FKL Coordinator's oversight.
- Ensure all documentation upholds feminist principles of care, dignity, consent, and narrative justice.
- Coordinate communication and engagement with Feminist Republik Registry partners, maintaining follow-up on data submission, MoU compliance, and partnership deliverables.
- Maintain and update Registry partnership documentation, MoU trackers, and partner engagement records.
- Lead data submission follow-ups and conduct thematic review and quality checks of Registry datasets in collaboration with the MEAL team.
- Coordinate advisory committee logistics, prepare meeting materials, and document decisions and follow-up actions.
- Support the FKL Coordinator and MEAL team in data collection, extraction, and compilation tasks for biannual and annual reporting cycles.
- Demonstrate at least 2–4 years of experience coordinating research, documentation, or knowledge management projects within an NGO, civil society, or feminist organisation.
- Apply feminist research methodologies and principles in the design and facilitation of participatory learning processes.
- Produce high-quality written outputs — including reports, learning briefs, and synthesis notes — with minimal editorial guidance.
- Manage multiple workstreams simultaneously, meeting deadlines and proactively communicating progress or risks to supervisors.
- Engage professionally and sensitively with a diverse range of partners, including grassroots feminist organisations and movement actors across Africa.
- Use data management tools and maintain accurate tracking systems for partner engagement and MEAL-related tasks.
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of monitoring, evaluation, accountability, and learning (MEAL) frameworks in the NGO context.
- Communicate fluently in English, both written and spoken; proficiency in French or other African languages is an added advantage.
- Hold a Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, Gender Studies, Development Studies, International Relations, or a related field.
UAF-Africa offers a competitive remuneration package commensurate with experience and qualifications, estimated in the range of KES 100,000–150,000 per month for this level of role. The organisation is committed to staff wellbeing and provides a supportive, feminist-centred working environment. Specific benefits are aligned with UAF-Africa's HR policies and may include medical cover and professional development opportunities.
This role is ideal for a feminist practitioner with a background in social sciences, gender studies, or development who has hands-on experience in research coordination, documentation, and knowledge management within a civil society or NGO setting. You are a self-starter who takes ownership of your work, communicates proactively, and is deeply committed to feminist principles and movement solidarity. You thrive in collaborative environments and bring rigour, creativity, and care to everything you produce.
This role is NOT suitable for: Candidates with no prior experience in NGO or civil society settings, those without demonstrated writing and documentation skills, or applicants who are unfamiliar with feminist frameworks and approaches to research and knowledge production.
- Prepare an updated CV and a cover letter clearly articulating your interest in the role and how your experience aligns with the key responsibilities.
- Ensure your cover letter reflects your understanding of and commitment to feminist principles.
- Submit your application through the UAF-Africa official website or the advertised application portal.
- Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. Due to the volume of applications, individual feedback may not be provided to unsuccessful applicants.
