Health and Safety Officer

Burhani Engineers Ltd, a leading EPC Electrical and Instrumentation Engineering company operating across East and Central Africa, is seeking a dedicated and experienced Health and Safety Officer to join their Nairobi-based team. The company delivers end-to-end solutions in electrical, instrumentation, mechanical, and civil fields, with active operations in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

In this role, you will be the frontline champion of workplace safety across all project sites and operational facilities. You will be responsible for ensuring full regulatory compliance, driving a proactive safety culture, managing incident response, and continuously improving health and safety systems to protect both personnel and assets across complex engineering environments.

• Ensure strict compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) and all applicable Kenyan health and safety regulations across all project sites.
• Conduct regular site inspections, safety audits, and comprehensive risk assessments to identify hazards before they escalate.
• Develop, implement, and monitor safe work method statements and safety procedures for all operational activities.
• Maintain and update risk registers for all assigned projects, ensuring accuracy and relevance at all times.
• Deliver health and safety inductions for new employees, subcontractors, and site visitors, ensuring everyone understands site-specific risks and protocols.
• Organize and facilitate toolbox talks, safety training sessions, and emergency response drills on a regular basis.
• Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses thoroughly, prepare detailed reports, and drive implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
• Develop and maintain emergency response plans, ensuring all teams are trained and prepared to respond effectively.
• Oversee the availability, condition, and proper use of all safety equipment including PPE, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and emergency signage.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date safety records, inspection logs, permits to work, and compliance documentation.
• Prepare and present periodic safety performance reports to management, highlighting trends, risks, and improvement recommendations.
• Stay current with changes in health and safety legislation, industry standards, and best practices relevant to engineering and construction environments.

• Must hold a Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
• Must demonstrate at least 4 years of hands-on health and safety experience within engineering, construction, or industrial project environments.
• Must be registered with or eligible for registration with the Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health Services (DOSH) in Kenya.
• Must be able to conduct independent risk assessments and develop practical control measures without supervision.
• Must be able to lead safety investigations, identify root causes, and prepare professional incident reports with actionable recommendations.
• Must demonstrate the ability to engage and influence site teams, subcontractors, and management on safety compliance matters.
• Must be proficient in maintaining safety documentation systems, permit-to-work processes, and audit trails.
• Must be able to design and deliver effective safety training, toolbox talks, and emergency preparedness drills.
• Proficiency in MS Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for reporting and documentation purposes is required.
• Possession of a NEBOSH, IOSH, or equivalent internationally recognized safety certification will be a strong added advantage.

Burhani Engineers Ltd offers a competitive remuneration package commensurate with experience and qualifications. Based on current Kenyan market benchmarks for mid-level health and safety roles in the engineering and construction sector, the estimated monthly gross salary for this position ranges between KES 100,000 and KES 180,000. Specific compensation details will be discussed during the interview process.
