Locum Nurse – Wound Care

Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) Nairobi is seeking an experienced and highly skilled Locum Nurse specialising in Wound Care to join its dynamic clinical team on a contract basis. In this role, you will serve as the primary specialist responsible for comprehensive wound assessment, management, and patient education. You will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams — including physicians, surgeons, and allied health professionals — to deliver evidence-based wound care, ostomy management, and skin integrity programmes that measurably improve patient outcomes.

• Conduct thorough wound assessments and reassessments for patients with acute and chronic wounds, applying current evidence-based wound management principles.
• Demonstrate expert knowledge of wound staging systems and apply this knowledge consistently in clinical decision-making.
• Develop and implement individualised skin care programmes to prevent skin breakdown in at-risk patients.
• Revise patient care plans in response to treatment outcomes, continuously evaluating plan effectiveness and adjusting interventions accordingly.
• Apply appropriate pain management techniques and provide clear patient and family education on pain management strategies.
• Deliver pre- and post-operative education and assessments for patients undergoing surgery resulting in an ostomy.
• Administer medications correctly, with consideration for patient age and clinical condition.
• Act as a clinical resource to physicians, nursing staff, and other hospital personnel; conduct in-service training on wound prevention, wound care, ostomy care, and continence management.
• Communicate assessment findings and care updates clearly and promptly to nurse managers and physicians.
• Consult and collaborate with other healthcare professionals and departments to ensure an interdisciplinary approach to patient care.
• Attend relevant seminars, conferences, and continuing education programmes; stay current with advancements in wound care and ostomy management.
• Evaluate clinical wound care products on the market and make evidence-informed recommendations to the care team.
• Document all assessment data, care interventions, multidisciplinary discussions, and patient/family interactions accurately, comprehensively, and in a timely manner.
• Perform pain assessment and reassessment; initiate analgesia as per established protocols.
• Report unusual clinical and non-clinical findings or incidences promptly to the nurse manager, team leader, or physician.
• Identify patient and family education needs and implement appropriate teaching interventions.
• Recognise pre-arrest or arrest states and initiate Basic Life Support as required.
• Maintain a safe patient environment through strict adherence to infection control policies and practices.

• Must hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) or equivalent qualification recognised by the Nursing Council of Kenya.
• Must demonstrate a minimum of 6 years of clinical nursing experience, with a significant portion dedicated to wound care, ostomy management, or tissue viability nursing.
• Must be able to independently assess, stage, and manage complex acute and chronic wounds using current clinical guidelines.
• Must apply evidence-based pain management protocols and communicate these effectively to patients and families.
• Must be proficient in developing and monitoring skin integrity and wound prevention programmes for high-risk patients.
• Must demonstrate the ability to conduct pre- and post-operative ostomy patient education with measurable understanding outcomes.
• Must be able to operate effectively within a multidisciplinary team, including physicians, surgeons, dietitians, and physiotherapists.
• Must maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive clinical documentation in line with hospital standards.
• Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) and be capable of initiating emergency response as needed.
• Must demonstrate commitment to continuous professional development and staying current with wound care innovations and technologies.

Aga Khan University Hospital offers competitive remuneration aligned with Kenyan private healthcare sector standards for specialist nursing roles. For a Wound Care Nurse at this experience level, the estimated monthly package ranges from KES 85,000 to KES 120,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
