Medical Officer – Outreach Clinic Meru

Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) is seeking a dedicated and competent Medical Officer to join its Outreach Clinic team based in Meru. In this role, you will serve as a frontline clinician responsible for delivering comprehensive primary and emergency medical care to patients at the Meru outreach clinic. You will work within a collaborative multidisciplinary team, upholding AKUH's standards of patient-centred, evidence-based practice while fostering strong referral pathways to the main hospital for complex cases.

• Conduct thorough patient reviews and physical examinations, including taking detailed case histories and ordering appropriate diagnostic laboratory and radiology investigations in line with evidence-based protocols.
• Monitor and manage the progress of both acutely and chronically ill patients on a regular, systematic basis.
• Engage patients and caregivers in meaningful clinical discussions to improve diagnostic accuracy and therapeutic outcomes.
• Perform privileged, potentially life-saving emergency surgical and medical procedures when clinically indicated.
• Deliver evidence-based preventive care, including wellness examinations, health risk assessments, early disease detection, and patient education on illness prevention.
• Initiate timely referrals and consultations with relevant specialists and departments to ensure optimal management of complex cases.
• Coordinate with clinic management and the main AKUH hospital to facilitate smooth, efficient patient referrals.
• Collaborate closely with clinical and administrative team members to deliver coordinated, patient-centric care while minimising errors and optimising resource utilisation.
• Actively participate in clinic quality improvement initiatives in partnership with the Clinic Management and the Quality and Patient Safety team.

• Ability to independently assess, diagnose, and manage a broad range of acute and chronic medical conditions in an outpatient and emergency setting.
• Demonstrated competence in performing emergency medical and minor surgical procedures safely and effectively.
• Strong clinical documentation skills, including accurate and thorough medical record-keeping.
• Ability to communicate complex medical information clearly to patients and caregivers of varying literacy levels.
• Proven capacity to collaborate within multidisciplinary teams and escalate clinical concerns appropriately.
• Commitment to continuous quality improvement and patient safety standards.
• Familiarity with referral systems and the ability to coordinate care between outreach and tertiary-level facilities.
• Must hold a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) or equivalent qualification.
• Must have completed at least 2 years of post-graduate internship training.
• Must be fully registered with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board (KMPDB).
• Must hold a valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certificate.

Aga Khan University Hospital offers a competitive, market-aligned remuneration package. Based on Kenyan market benchmarks for Medical Officers at this level, the estimated monthly salary range is KES 180,000 – KES 280,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience. This role is ideal for a recently qualified Medical Officer with at least 2 years of post-internship experience who is passionate about outreach and community healthcare delivery. You thrive in a fast-paced clinical environment, are comfortable managing a diverse patient caseload independently, and are committed to evidence-based practice and patient safety. Candidates with prior experience in outreach, peri-urban, or rural clinical settings will have a strong advantage.
