Pharmaceutical Technologist

Nairobi Hospital, one of Kenya's premier healthcare institutions, is seeking a skilled and dedicated Pharmaceutical Technologist to join its pharmacy team. This full-time role is central to ensuring patients receive accurate, safe, and timely medication dispensing services in line with established clinical protocols and regulatory standards.

• Receive, review, and verify written prescriptions and refill requests to ensure completeness, accuracy, and clinical appropriateness before dispensing.
• Respond to patient inquiries regarding medications in a courteous, timely, and professional manner, maintaining patient confidentiality at all times.
• Prepare, package, and handle chemotherapy medications and other high-risk drugs in strict accordance with safety protocols and occupational health guidelines.
• Assist in filling, processing, and dispensing medications to patients and hospital units while upholding quality care and safety standards.
• Support drug inventory management through consistent inventory control practices, including stock-taking and reconciliation.
• Initiate and coordinate the procurement process for medications to prevent stock-outs and ensure continuous availability of essential drugs.
• Conduct regular checks on medication expiration dates and facilitate timely removal and proper disposal of expired stock.
• Maintain accurate, up-to-date records and documentation of all pharmacy transactions in both paper and electronic systems.
• Perform any additional duties as assigned by the supervising pharmacist or department head in support of pharmacy operations.

• Demonstrate proficiency in interpreting and verifying medical prescriptions, identifying errors or interactions before dispensing.
• Apply knowledge of pharmaceutical compounding, including safe handling of cytotoxic and chemotherapy agents.
• Maintain organized drug inventory systems and accurately track stock movements to prevent wastage and shortages.
• Communicate clearly and empathetically with patients from diverse backgrounds, providing medication counselling as required.
• Operate within the legal and ethical framework of the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Kenya, adhering to all licensing and compliance requirements.
• Work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced hospital environment while maintaining precision and attention to detail.
• Use pharmacy management software and record-keeping tools to document dispensing activities accurately.
• Collaborate with nurses, physicians, and other clinical staff to ensure seamless medication management for inpatient and outpatient care.

The salary for this position is competitive and aligned with the Kenyan healthcare sector market rates for experienced pharmaceutical technologists. Estimated monthly compensation ranges between KES 60,000 and KES 90,000 depending on experience and qualifications. This role is ideal for a licensed Pharmaceutical Technologist with at least two years of hands-on hospital pharmacy experience who thrives in a structured clinical setting and is committed to patient-centred care. You should be registered with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Kenya and hold a current practicing licence. This role is not suitable for candidates without a valid PPB practicing licence, those with no hospital pharmacy experience, or applicants who do not hold a Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology from a recognized institution.
