Network Engineer

Our client, a fast-growing Internet Service Provider (ISP) based in Kenya, is looking for a skilled and dependable Network Engineer to join their technical team. This is a hands-on, high-impact role responsible for designing, configuring, and maintaining robust network infrastructure across LAN, WAN, and WLAN environments serving both enterprise and retail customers.

The successful candidate will be at the heart of the ISP's operations — ensuring high availability, optimal performance, and airtight security across customer-facing and internal network systems. • Design, deploy, and manage scalable ISP network infrastructure including fiber optic, wireless, and radio link technologies.
• Configure and maintain routing and switching environments using Cisco and MikroTik equipment.
• Plan and execute network expansions, upgrades, and capacity improvements.
• Monitor network performance continuously to ensure maximum uptime and reliability across all services.
• Troubleshoot and resolve network outages, latency issues, and performance bottlenecks within SLA timelines.
• Perform scheduled maintenance, system upgrades, and patch management activities.
• Implement and maintain network security measures including firewalls, VPNs, and intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS).
• Conduct regular vulnerability assessments and proactively mitigate identified risks.
• Ensure all network operations adhere to security policies and industry best practices.
• Work closely with the Network Operations Center (NOC) to ensure efficient incident response, escalation, and resolution.
• Provide Tier 2 and Tier 3 technical support for complex network-related issues.
• Maintain comprehensive and up-to-date documentation for network configurations, processes, and troubleshooting runbooks.
• Support enterprise and retail customers with end-to-end connectivity solutions and service onboarding.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with technical support teams, field engineers, and sales to ensure seamless service delivery.

• Must be able to design and implement scalable ISP-grade network architectures independently with at least 5 years of relevant experience.
• Must demonstrate hands-on proficiency configuring Cisco routers, switches, and MikroTik devices in live production environments.
• Must be able to diagnose and resolve complex network faults including BGP/OSPF routing issues, link failures, and bandwidth congestion.
• Must be capable of deploying and managing fiber optic networks and wireless/radio link systems.
• Must be able to implement and audit network security controls including firewalls, VPN tunnels, and IDS/IPS systems.
• Must be able to work effectively within or alongside a 24/7 NOC environment, including incident management and escalation procedures.
• Must hold a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Telecommunications, or a closely related field.
• Must possess or be actively working towards CCNA/CCNP, HCIP, or MikroTik certifications (MTCNA, MTCRE) — these are a strong added advantage.
• Must be able to produce and maintain clear technical documentation, network diagrams, and SOPs.

The budgeted monthly gross salary for this role is KES 70,000 – 90,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. This is a competitive package within the Kenyan ISP industry for a mid-to-senior network engineering professional.

Ideal candidate: You are a seasoned network engineer with at least 5 years of experience working within an ISP or telco environment. You have direct, hands-on experience with Cisco and MikroTik infrastructure, are comfortable operating in high-pressure NOC settings, and take ownership of network uptime and security. You are proactive, well-documented in your work, and thrive in fast-paced, growth-oriented companies.
