Job Description
Capwell Industries Ltd is a fast-growing Kenyan food and beverage manufacturer producing a wide range of convenience foods including snacks, ready-to-eat products, beverages, and extruded puffed snacks. The company is scaling rapidly and investing in building world-class manufacturing operations capable of launching new products reliably and at speed.
As Value Stream Manager – NPD & Convenience Foods, you will take full end-to-end ownership of Capwell's NPD and Convenience Foods value stream. This covers the Beverage Plant, Ready-to-Eat (RTE) operations, Extrusion and Puffed Snacks, FRK production, and Fried Snack manufacturing. Reporting to the Head of Manufacturing & Engineering, you will lead supervisors, shift leads, and production operators, and act as the manufacturing execution lead within Capwell's NPD Stage-Gate process. This is fundamentally a build role — you will bring lean discipline to a high-growth environment, create standards where none yet exist, and establish the operational foundation required for reliable, scalable product launches.
- Map, manage, and continuously improve the end-to-end flow of materials and information through the convenience foods value stream from current-state to future-state
- Drive systematic waste elimination using lean tools: takt time management, standard work, visual management, 5S, Kaizen, and pull systems
- Lead daily, weekly, and monthly tier management routines, embedding structured accountability at every level of the stream
- Own the stream's capacity model and OEE programme, identifying top loss contributors and leading focused improvement activities
- Serve as the manufacturing lead in Capwell's NPD Stage-Gate process — from feasibility through line trials, process validation, and commercial launch sign-off
- Own the ramp from validated pilot to full commercial production, establishing manufacturing standards, SOPs, yield targets, and quality control points for every new product
- Maintain an NPD pipeline tracker and represent manufacturing readiness at every Stage-Gate checkpoint
- Provide deep technical leadership across extrusion processing, puffed snack manufacturing, seasoning and flavouring systems, frying technologies, beverage processing, and RTE food manufacturing
- Optimise process parameters across all lines to improve product quality, throughput, yield, and cost efficiency in close collaboration with Engineering and Maintenance
- Own food safety and quality standards across the value stream, ensuring compliance with relevant regulatory and customer requirements
- Build team capability through coaching, structured development plans, and skills gap identification
- Degree in Food Science, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline
- Proven experience managing a manufacturing value stream in a food processing environment
- Strong working knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and tools (VSM, 5S, Kaizen, OEE, standard work)
- Hands-on experience with extrusion, frying, puffed snacks, beverage processing, or RTE food manufacturing is highly desirable
- Experience leading NPD commercialisation and scale-up within a Stage-Gate or similar structured innovation process
- Demonstrated ability to build systems and standards from scratch in a fast-paced, high-growth environment
- Strong people leadership skills with experience managing multi-level manufacturing teams
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a data-driven mindset
Requirements Breakdown
Must Have
- Degree in Food Science, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical discipline
- Proven experience managing a manufacturing value stream in food processing

- Technical expertise in at least two of: extrusion, frying, beverage processing, or RTE manufacturing
- Experience leading NPD/commercialisation processes from feasibility through launch
Nice to Have
- Background in food safety and regulatory compliance (HACCP, ISO 22000, customer food safety audits)
- Experience with OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) improvement programmes

Likely Interview Questions
- 1
Walk us through a value stream mapping exercise you led in a food manufacturing environment—what was the current state, what improvements did you implement, and what measurable results did you achieve?
- 2
Describe your experience taking a product from pilot trial through to full commercial production. What manufacturing standards and SOPs did you establish, and how did you manage the ramp?
- 3
Tell us about a time you used lean tools to eliminate a significant source of waste or downtime in a production line. What was the problem, which tools did you use, and what was the impact?
- 4
How do you approach building capability in a manufacturing team? Give us an example of how you identified a skills gap and developed your team to close it.
- 5
What experience do you have with food safety and regulatory compliance? How have you ensured adherence to HACCP, ISO 22000, or customer food safety requirements in a fast-paced environment?
Application Tips
Lead with quantified lean and operational improvements: mention specific metrics (e.g. OEE improvement %, waste reduction %, cycle time reduction %) from your previous roles to show impact.
Emphasise multi-line or multi-process technical experience—this role spans five distinct production types (beverage, RTE, extrusion, frying, FRK), so highlight breadth of technical knowledge across different food manufacturing technologies.
Highlight experience in a build or scale-up environment: this is explicitly a 'build role,' so showcase examples of creating standards, documenting SOPs, or establishing systems where they didn't exist before.
Demonstrate NPD or product launch experience: reference Stage-Gate involvement, feasibility assessments, line trials, or process validation—this is core to the role and differentiates you from pure operations candidates.

Green Flags
- Explicit 'build role' framing—this is attractive for leaders who want ownership and the chance to establish systems and standards rather than maintain existing ones.
- Breadth of technical exposure—managing five distinct production lines (beverage, RTE, extrusion, frying, FRK) offers rare multi-process expertise and learning opportunity in one role.
- Clear reporting line to Head of Manufacturing & Engineering and defined Stage-Gate accountability—signals structured governance and strategic alignment rather than chaotic firefighting.
- Capwell's explicit investment in 'world-class manufacturing operations' and rapid scaling—strong signal of financial backing, modern equipment, and company commitment to operational excellence.
Watch Out
- Salary not specified—this is a senior leadership role with high accountability; applicants should clarify compensation expectations early in the interview process.
- Role description cuts off mid-sentence in the requirements section, suggesting the full job brief may not have been provided; request complete role documentation before applying.
- No mention of benefits, work schedule flexibility, or career development pathways, which are important for a build role at a growth-stage company; ask about these during interviews.
A Day in the Life
Your week spans structured tier management routines (daily huddles with shift leads on line performance and safety, weekly value stream reviews on OEE and yield, monthly business reviews with leadership), hands-on troubleshooting on the production floor (optimising process parameters with your team, investigating quality or throughput issues), and strategic NPD work (attending Stage-Gate checkpoints to assess manufacturing readiness, leading line trials for new products, validating processes before commercial launch). You'll move fluidly between the extrusion line troubleshooting a throughput bottleneck, the beverage plant coaching a supervisor on standard work, and a conference room validating manufacturing costs and timelines for a new snack product launching in three months.
