Job Description

Role Overview

Conservation International is seeking a highly skilled Senior Financial Analyst to join its Structured Finance, Analysis and Risk (SFAR) team within the Nature Finance Group (NFG). Based in Nairobi with a remote working arrangement, this role places you at the forefront of global efforts to unlock nature financing at scale and close the nature funding gap. The NFG deploys innovative funding strategies, financial instruments, and business models to drive large-scale investments that address the twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss.

The SFAR team serves as a centre of financial and analytical excellence, partnering with NFG verticals, Conservation International broadly, and external stakeholders to provide financial structuring, business management, risk assessment, and impact support. Reporting to the Vice President, Sustainable Finance, the Senior Financial Analyst will lead and support the development of complex financial models, conduct rigorous investment analysis, and build tools that strengthen the operational capacity of NFG programmes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and review sophisticated financial models in Excel, including pooled asset vehicles such as blended finance fund structures and outcome bonds.
  • Prepare and review financial models for carbon projects, covering both in-house and external developer initiatives.
  • Support early-stage business modelling, including complex structures such as convertible debt instruments.
  • Review financial models prepared by external parties in the context of debt restructuring, including sovereign debt refinancing for nature.
  • Conduct regular financial monitoring of GEF and GCF Nature-based Investment (NGI) portfolio investments.
  • Support financial due diligence processes for new investment opportunities across the NFG pipeline.
  • Develop analytical tools and systems to improve operational efficiency and reporting within NFG programmes.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners on transaction structuring and programme design.
  • Contribute to knowledge products, reports, and presentations that communicate financial analysis to diverse audiences including investors, donors, and government counterparts.
Required Skills & Experience
  • Build and audit multi-scenario, multi-currency financial models in Excel with minimal supervision, demonstrating advanced modelling proficiency.
  • Analyse blended finance structures, green bonds, carbon markets, and nature-based investment vehicles with a clear understanding of risk-return dynamics.
  • Interpret and assess financial statements, term sheets, and investment memoranda for early-stage and structured finance transactions.
  • Apply knowledge of international climate finance mechanisms (GEF, GCF, or equivalent) to portfolio monitoring and reporting tasks.
  • Communicate complex financial concepts clearly in writing and verbally to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Work independently across time zones in a remote, multicultural team environment, managing competing priorities effectively.
  • Hold a Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, Business, or a related quantitative field; a postgraduate qualification or CFA designation is a strong advantage.
  • Bring 5–7 years of progressively responsible experience in financial analysis, investment management, structured finance, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrate prior exposure to conservation finance, climate finance, or the broader sustainability/impact investing sector as a distinguishing asset.
Salary & Benefits

Conservation International offers competitive compensation benchmarked against international NGO standards. For this senior-level role based in Nairobi, the estimated monthly gross salary ranges from KES 250,000 to KES 400,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The organisation also provides a comprehensive benefits package in line with its global HR policies.

  • Flexible remote working arrangement
  • International exposure and cross-border collaboration
  • Professional development and learning opportunities
  • Comprehensive medical insurance coverage
  • Meaningful mission-driven work in conservation and climate finance
Who Should Apply

This role is ideal for a seasoned financial professional who combines technical rigour with a genuine passion for environmental sustainability. You thrive in complex, fast-moving environments, are comfortable working with ambiguous early-stage opportunities, and bring the intellectual curiosity to understand both the financial and ecological dimensions of nature-based investments. You may be currently working in investment banking, development finance, private equity, or impact investing and are looking to apply your skills to one of the most pressing challenges of our time.

You should not apply if you have fewer than 5 years of hands-on financial modelling experience, are uncomfortable working independently in a fully remote setting, or are seeking a purely accounting or bookkeeping role. This is a high-level analytical and structuring position, not an operational finance role.

  • Reporting line is to Vice President of Sustainable Finance, but the broader organisational structure and mentoring/support available for a remote-based analyst in Nairobi are unclear.

A Day in the Life

☀️

Your week spans building out DCF models for a potential blended finance fund in collaboration with the Nigeria team, reviewing and auditing financial models submitted by external carbon project developers, and preparing a portfolio monitoring report on GCF-funded nature investments across East Africa. You spend afternoons developing an automated reporting tool in Excel to improve operational efficiency and conclude the week with a presentation to the Nature Finance Group leadership on risk-return trade-offs in your latest analysis.
